Thrifting is an art!

At Cousins Dump N Run, we're always looking for ways to give back to the community and to elimate what is going into the landfill. That's why we're excited to announce our new partnership with Thriftology, a local thrift shop owned by the amazing Judy.

Judy took over an old pawn shop in 2021 and turned it into a community hub, where people can buy gently used items at affordable prices. Not only does Thriftology offer a wide selection of household items, but it also provides a space for local artists to showcase their work with HeartSpace. By utilizing their community space they are able to focus on arts & culture by providing events like art shows, commedy events, and cooking classes connecting Lake City's diverse community.

As part of our partnership with Thriftology, we're excited to be able to take items normally destined for the dump like clothes, furniture and small appliances, a 2nd life. When we started Cousins, we quickly realized how difficult it was to donate certain items. Items were constantly turned away that were still in amazing shape. Judy puts in time and energy to clean up items that other thirft stores refuse to take. She takes pride in her store and what product she has inside of it.

Tips for cleaning & getting rid of clutter

Cleaning and getting rid of clutter can be a daunting task. Here are some tips to help you get started:

Struggling on present ideas?

I don't know about you, but sometimes I struggle with what to get as a gift. Every year, I go in my parents attic to bring down their holiday boxes to help decorate. And every year it is jammed packed and I get the pleasure of helping them go through everything. This is a yearly project! Its always amusing, finding old school projects like dioramas from grade school, pictures from middle school, or my senior project poster. I never know what I'll find. But I do always enjoy going through this stuff. Somehow, we always can go through things, and reorganize. I take a box of memories. My brother's take a box of memories. And of course, they keep several. But we also realize what we can part with, donate, or recycle.

Got a flat?

Today was the first day of ❄️ here in Seattle for the year. We were busy moving a lovely lady in the north end. When we got back to the office, we noticed a weird sound coming from one of our trailer tires. A hissing sound. Sure enough, a huge gash in the side of the tire. Losing air quick so we patched it up best as we could to make it down the road safely. The tire needed to get fixed right away to keep us in business. I tried a few tire shops and no one had availability today. I needed an appointment and would need to go through an entire process. Time is money! What was I going to do?
I remembered seeing this local tire shop down by my house and thought I'd check it out. I pulled into their lot and right away I was greeted by a super friendly gentleman. He checked out my tire right away. Because of the driving conditions, he wanted to fix it for me right then. What a life saver! It was super quick amd efficient. I showed up, got amazing customer service where the guy was funny and knowledgeable, he changed the tire for me and off I went within 20 minutes total. And such a good price!
From now on, I will be going to Angel's Tire Shop off Lake City Way. Right before you take the ramp to the freeway South, you'll see his shop on your right (right before Roosters coffee).

Holiday Season has arrived

Do any of you love the holiday season? I sure do. The lights and decorations, family, events, yummy food and drinks, ��, and the joyful mood of those around us. Recently, one thing I struggle with is feeling overcrowded. I have so many decorations I want to put up and little space. I've collected decor since my teenage years and I'm at a point where I need more space. Do I really need to keep the string lights that don't work? Lol, what if they magically turn back on!? Do I need to keep the smelly tree topper that got a huge stain on it while I was in college? How about the broken Santa that I thought I'd superglue back together...8 years ago? I don't think so!

This year, I am making a point to clean out all of my storage areas. Closets, sheshed, storage room, you name it, I'm going through it. As alot of you know, I tore my ACL and will be needing surgery next month. I will need some extra space to move around! I want to take this time and declutter so I can truly appreciate all the decorations and not feel overwhelmed while recovering. How about you? Do you need to declutter before the festivities? Growing up, the Cousins always spent this season together despite living 3 hours apart. Remember, Austin is from Kenmore & I am from Astoria. When we were younger, we spent alot of time on the mountain, skiing & snowboarding. I was athletic but prone to getting hurt. I lived in casts. Austin loves to remind me of this. One year, Austin and I were out on the mountain, and I had some gnarly falls. I was proud of myself though, I didn't get hurt! Successful ski trip. We were gearing up to leave and headed back to the sweet minivan with all 6 of us Cousins, and I biff it. I mean, I went down hard! The ice monster got me. And of course, I broke my arm. Needless to say, health is wealth. Take care of yourself, your body, mind, and space. Clear out those storage areas, call the Cousins for help and enjoy this Holiday Season.

Appliance Wednesday

Summer is over

It's hard to believe that we just finished our 5th appliance Wednesday this week. We do this special on the last Wednesdayof every month. That's 5 months in business. That's 5 months of junk. Thats 5 months of yard debris that we have collected. It's amazing how many households have that one appliance sitting somewhere in the house that has just sat there. We started Appliance Wednesday because we noticed alot of people reaching out for just that 1 thing. Not an entire truck load worth of stuff. It is our day to sort of give back and pick up these appliances for the price of gas. This weeks Appliance day certainly pounded the fact that summer is over because we picked up about 12 barbecues from our 16 stops which is by far the biggest amount of barbecues we've picked up on an appliance day. Today did bring another sense of challenge as we had to get a 400 lb wood stove out of someone's backyard, with one of us having a torn acl. At first we were unsure if we could do it but challenge accepted! It does give us a sense of accomplishment when we get something out or moved that we didn't think we could get out. We look forward to every Appliance day because that is the day that shows we are in business another month and getting out there to meet new customers and here about their stories.

Sentimental Junk

The Tube TV

When people hear about companies that pick up junk, it seems there might be a negative connotation or a sense of grossness to that. They take the word "junk" literal, not realizing a lot of the time what we're picking up are peoples favorite things. TVs they had for 20 years where they watched their favorite shows on. But over the years, the big box tvs have gone out of style (or will they come back in style soon!?). We pick up couches that families have raised their kids on. We pick up computer desks that once housed computers connecting to the internet on dial-up. It's hard for people to let go of some of the stuff we pick up. A lot of the stuff/junk is sentimental.

Today we were lucky enough to go pick up an old TV from a couple with the most magnificent house in the middle of Seattle. Her backyard had Thornton Creek running through it but it looked like the most peaceful little flowing pond with a giant backyard for her adorable dogs. It looked like a bamboo forest. For a moment, we weren't in Pinehurst. Then she took us to her relaxation/yoga room where she had very fine live edge tree trunks shooting from the floor to the ceiling. It's going and seeing houses like this that makes our days a little different each time we head out to do some jobs. It's people like Yingshan that puts a smile on our face at the end of the day.

What a week we had! How is it fall in the PNW and 80 degrees? We added some new fun things to our Cousins resume in this heat. Such cool projects!

Gutter cleaning, pressure washing, a kitchen demo, office furniture clear out and more. We get to meet some amazing people doing this work. Our customers, supporters, and people that we run into while out canvassing are phenomenal.

This week we had the pleasure to go see Grandma Marty! What an inspiration she is. 96 years old and still spitting out ideas for our business. She has been a huge support. We couldn't be more thankful. Thanks to Marty's brilliant ideas & heart for community, going forward we will be offering services in retirement homes for a low price, to pick up items residents want to get rid of. We are super excited to be offering this service. Getting to see Marty while we work is a reminder of why we do what we do!
